No one less than Sting himself is this year’s headliner at the successful series of Symphonica in Rosso concerts. Following Marco Borsato, Paul de Leeuw, Lionel Richie and Diana Ross, the English star announced that he was also to play the Netherlands’ largest musical spectacle, where he is to perform renditions of both his own greatest hits and those with The Police, accompanied by the British 45-piece Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra. GelreDome is to host the fifth edition of Symphonica in Rosso on Friday 15 and 16 October 2010, and the event promises to be the musical highlight of the year, thanks to the appearance of Sting.
‘I'm delighted by this new opportunity to perform at Symphonica in Rosso with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and reinterpret the songs I've been playing for many years. It's the biggest band I've ever had - it's like 50 of us on stage,’ said Sting.
The highly renowned Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra is to produce special arrangements of the hits of Sting and The Police for a full orchestra. However, it may be spoilt for choice, given the incredible number of hits recorded. The public’s favourites by The Police include Roxanne, Message in a Bottle, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic and Every Breath You Take, while Sting’s solo career also comprised numerous highlights, such as Englishman in New York, Fragile, All for Love, If I Ever Lose My Faith in You and Fields of Gold.
STING
As The Police front man, Sting achieved huge success in the early eighties. Later, as a solo artist, he proceeded to expand the boundaries of pop music, amalgamating elements of jazz, classical and world music in his numbers. And all of these musical worlds are to unite during Symphonica in Rosso. Sting has had numerous platinum albums and has achieved worldwide sales of almost 100 million records.
ROYAL PHILHARMONIC CONCERT ORCHESTRA
The British Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra has a reputation to defend as one of the world’s leading orchestras. It performs highly varied musical genres, accompanying both opera and pop stars. The orchestra has previously collaborated with leading artists including Andrea Bocelli, Luciano Pavarotti, Burt Bacharach, Cliff Richard and Tina Turner. At Symphonica in Rosso, the orchestra is to be directed by the highly acclaimed Steven Mercurio.
SYMPHONICA IN ROSSO
Symphonica in Rosso is widely renowned as the Netherlands’ most prestigious and superior quality musical event. The first four editions of the event attracted a total of over 675,000 spectators, divided among 21 sell-out concerts at GelreDome. Its combination of stunning performances by the biggest artists, a huge stage, special lighting and sound technologies, impressive visuals and an audience entirely dressed in red, render Symphonica in Rosso an overwhelming extravaganza year after year. Symphonica in Rosso is an absolutely gigantic production, even by global standards. For instance, over 600 people are involved in the spectacular show, while the immense stage holds some 120 performers at certain points.
